Of the roughly 44,000 R32 Skyline GT-Rs built, the ones collectors argue about most are the GT-R NISMO: the stripped-out Group A homologation special launched on March 11, 1990. Nissan offered 500 road cars, while period accounts commonly cite 560 examples once competition-base cars are included. Priced at ¥4.41 million, it came without ABS, air conditioning or audio.
Motor Fan has just featured one that its owner refuses to treat as a safe-deposit box. Bought roughly 20 years ago and maintained ever since by West Sports in Fukuyama, Hiroshima, this NISMO keeps its period identity while replacing the way its engine is managed with thoroughly modern electronics.
From borrowed ECU to standalone control
The car's tuning history mirrors how RB26 tuning itself evolved. Before the current setup, it ran a factory ECU from the later BCNR33 GT-R. Today that is gone, replaced by a single HKS F-CON V Pro handling engine control outright, fed by R35 GT-R airflow metering.
The interesting choice is what West Sports did not do. Many modified RB26s use a speed-density setup — D-Jetro, in HKS terms — that deletes the airflow meters entirely. This car deliberately stays with measured airflow (L-Jetro), because the shop and owner prioritized consistent street behavior across seasons and conditions over chasing a bigger number. The factory airbox is still in place for the same reason.
HKS V-CAM, 12-hole injectors and 441 PS
Inside the engine, HKS's V-CAM system adds variable intake cam timing — hardware the RB26 never had from the factory — and aftermarket 12-hole injectors are intended to improve fuel atomization, giving the modern management finer control over combustion. According to the feature, the car reports 441.7 PS and 60.34 kgm of torque alongside real-world fuel economy of about 8 km/L — roughly 19 mpg US. Motor Fan does not specify how the output was measured or under what conditions the economy figure was logged, so read both as the shop's reported numbers rather than certified tests.
Even with those caveats, the pairing is the point. The build's stated goal was not a bigger dyno headline; it was a 36-year-old homologation special that behaves consistently in traffic, in summer, in winter, while making well over 400 PS — the argument for modern engine management made in the least dramatic way possible.
Why this matters beyond one car
The R32 GT-R NISMO occupies an awkward spot in the collector market: rare enough that originality carries real money, good enough to drive that locking one away feels like a waste. This build is one long-term owner's answer — preserve the car's identity as a homologation-era NISMO, and let the electronics quietly join the 2020s.
R32s have been eligible for US import under the 25-year rule for years now, and NISMOs occasionally surface at auction with heavy premiums. What rarely crosses the ocean with them is this: a two-decade relationship between one owner, one tuner and one particularly rare car. That part does not fit in a shipping container.
